PNC :: Vice Speaker Asks Governor, Congresswoman To Request More Time For DEIS Review
Thursday, 14 January 2010
Guam - Vice Speaker B.J. Cruz has written letters to Governor Camacho and Congresswoman Bordallo to request a further extension for reviewing the Draft Environmental Impact Statement on the military buildup.
In letters sent Thursday afternoon to both the Governor and the Congresswoman, Cruz cited U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's agreement to allow Japan until May of this year to reach a final decision on whether Japan will insist on the relocation of the Futenma air station in Okinawa.
The U.S. government's position is that the Marine contingent relocation to Guam will not take place if the Futenma air base must be moved. This delay, according to Cruz, should allow for more time for the people of Guam to prepare comments on the DEIS.
Vice Speaker Cruz indicated in his letters that the level of participation by the community during the recently help hearings on the DEIS show how seriously people will be affected by the buildup. Saying that each review of the DEIS raises more questions, an extension of the review period is justified.
