Japanese defence minister Tomomi Inada is considering visiting US military facilities on Guam to inspect the US Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, a government source was quoted by Kyodo news agency as saying on 20 November.
Inada is mulling a two-day visit from 11 December, the source said.
Inada's predecessor, Gen Nakatani, had said that Tokyo would consider deploying THAAD to counter the growing threat posed by North Korea's military provocations.
Japan's neighbour, South Korea, announced in July that it would deploy a battery of the advanced air defence system to Seongju County, North Gyeongsang Province.
